Does tantalum exhibit any intrinsic antimicrobial or antibiofilm properties?

Abstract: Compared with Ti controls, Ta did not demonstrate any intrinsic antibacterial activity or ability to inhibit biofilm formation. Hence, intrinsic antimicrobial properties of Ta do not account for the previously observed reduction in the frequency of subsequent infections when Ta was used in revision procedures. “…The theory is supported by the observation that implants with Ta(Tantalum), a transition metal that belongs to the same family with vanadium but is demonstrated to possess no intrinsic antibiofilm or antibacterial effects, have a much lower incidence of re-infection than traditional titanium materials in patients undergoing revised THA (total hip arthroplasty) due to IRI. The mainstream hypothesis of the antibacterial behaviour of tantalum relates to its stronger stimulation of osteogenesis than Ti materials and the resulting advantages in helping osteoblasts adhere to material surfaces, obliterate "dead space" and win the race for the surface [64]. As tantalum materials without intrinsic antibacterial effects are able to prevent infection in vivo, our nano-VO 2 films with simultaneous intrinsic antibacterial and osteogenic activities are predictably competent in the prophylaxis of infections in vivo.…”
