Does stress hyperglycemia affect mortality? Acute myocardial infarction – case control study

Abstract: Introduction: We aimed to investigate the effect of stress (acute) hyperglycemia in patients with acute coronary syndrome who had not been previously diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM) on the prognosis of the disease in terms of mortality. Material and methods: Patients who were admitted to the Adana Numune Training and Research Hospital Emergency Service Clinic between August 2010 and August 2013 and whose plasma blood glucose level was over 140 mg/dl at the time of admission but were not previously diagno… Show more

“…High ARPG levels after AMI are common and play a role in predicting adverse events in DM and non-diabetic patients [2,16]. Especially during hospitalization, it is a strong predictable factors for fatal outcomes in patients with AMI [5,17]. But A/C glycemic ratio was reported to be a better predictor of in-hospital morbidity and mortality than glycaemia at admission [3].…”

“…Studies show that stress hyperglycemia is present in one of four hospitalized ACS patients, and it is found in 41% of elderly patients. Stress hyperglycemia can be used as a prognostic indicator in patients with AMI [28], [29] According to Marfella et al [30], patients with hyperglycemia had a larger infarct size compared with normoglycemic patients, and also, there is evidence that supports an association between ventricular desynchrony and blood glucose levels in patients with MI, and an association with early in-hospital mortality in patients with AMI [31].…”
