“…Although the epidermoid cyst analysed with 3DR in this study connected with an eccrine dermal duct, the immunoreactivities for CEA, involucrin and several CKs of the cyst wall were not identical to those of normal eccrine dermal ducts but were identical to those of the suprabasal layers of the epidermis, as observed by Abe et al. , 8 Ohnishi and Watanabe 9 and Yokogawa et al 32 . This suggests that the immunoreactivities of the palmoplanatar epidermoid cysts may also be an indication of the metaplastic origin of the cysts from eccrine ducts.…”

“…Indeed, Abe et al 8 . and Ohnishi and Watanabe 9 questioned the hypothesis of an ‘eccrine duct origin of the epidermoid cyst’ on the basis of the immunoreactivities of several cytokeratins (CKs) which were not identical to those of sweat glands and ducts but were identical to those of suprabasal layers of the epidermis in plantar epidermoid cysts with HPV infection.…”

“…Some authors have insisted (4,17) that PPECs might develop from the eccrine duct due to HPV infection, and not from epidermal implantation. However, immunohistochemical observation of cytokeratin expression in PPECs did not support the eccrine ductal origin (20).…”

“…Some authors oppose the hypothesis of eccrine ductal origin of epidermal cyst because the expression of cytokeratin, involucrin, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as seen on immunohistochemistry of epidermal cysts, is identical to the suprabasal layers of the epidermis but not to eccrine dermal ducts 4 7 8 . However, the findings of Egawa et al 5 that the connected portion of the eccrine duct was hypertrophied with stratified squamous epithelium expressing CEA and involucrin suggests epidermoid metaplasia of eccrine duct epithelium and supports eccrine ductal origin of epidermal cysts.…”
