Does Leader-Follower Regulatory Fit Matter? The Role of Regulatory Fit in Followers’ Organizational Citizenship Behavior

Abstract: Due to increasing organizational demand and competition, employees’ goal-pursuit regulatory processes become pivotal to their work behavior and outcomes. Drawing on interpersonal regulatory fit theory, we proposed that leader prevention focus would moderate the relation between follower prevention focus and maintenance organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), whereas the relation between follower promotion focus and change OCB would be moderated by leader promotion focus. We tested these fit hypotheses using… Show more

“…Traditionally, difference scores between two constructs are often treated as congruent (that is, fit or match; Shin, Kim, Choi, Kim, & Oh, ) or incongruent (relative leader–member exchange: RLMX; Henderson, Wayne, Shore, Bommer, & Tetrick, ), and then used to predict the outcomes of interest. However, because traditional methods (such as, the algebraic, absolute, or squared difference between two measures) have several drawbacks (including reduced reliability, ambiguous interpretation, confounding effects, untested constraints, and dimension reduction) (Edwards, ), polynomial regression has been suggested as an alternative technique to deal with difference scores (Edwards, ; Edward & Parry, ).…”

“…There is a large body of literature in relation to OCB that involves industries such as general services, banking and financial services, and manufacturing [28], the state electrical grid industry [29], the technology industry [30], and the education industry [31]. The antecedent variables of OCB have been explored from four aspects: individual characteristic variables, task characteristic variables, organizational characteristic variables, and leadership variables.…”

“…This research hence contributes to managerial research beyond public management by suggesting the integration of moderation mechanism of organization-oriented employee forces, such as change-oriented organizational citizenship behaviour (Shin et al 2014;Campbell and Im 2015), into change models.…”
