Does Imagery Work? Effects on Performance and Mental Skills

Abstract: This paper provides a review of the literature on the relationship between imagery and sport performance as well as between imagery and the development of mental skills. First, the many anecdotal reports of imagery effectiveness are noted and a definition is provided focusing on the multidimensional nature of imagery. The evidence of the enhancing influence of imagery on sport performance is then examined by looking at the early studies (mental practice), case studies, preparatory imagery, imagery used as par… Show more

“…The results of the present study partially corroborates with those found in previous studies (Hall & Fishburne, 2010;Mayer & Herrman, 2009;Weinberg, 2008) which claim that mental training techniques have been largely used by psychologists, coaches and athletes as a tool for improving learning and performance in sports. In addition, imagery combined with relaxation is more effective than imagery alone (Gill & Williams, 2008).…”

“…For example, imagery training combined with video modelling is practical, especially for individuals who have some difficulties practising imagery due to lack of experience in specific events (e.g., Olympics, Tour de France) or limited sports and imagery skills [2]. Therefore, practitioners have regularly used a combination of imagery and modelling techniques with athletes in training, the main reason being to maximise their athletes' potential [3].…”
