Does general anesthesia have a clinical impact on intraocular pressure in children?

Abstract: Sevoflurane and propofol, both in combination with remifentanil, significantly lower IOP in children. Individual IOP levels rise and fall during anesthesia, depending on the time point of measurement. The lowest IOP can be measured immediately after induction of anesthesia. This needs to be taken into account when measuring IOP in children.

“…In order to reduce interference of depth of anesthesia with IOP values [24,25], IOP was always measured within the first minutes after initiation of anesthesia. Time point of IOP measurements, method of anesthesia, detailed description of anterior segment and gonioscopy findings, surgical status of the eye and signs of secondary glaucoma were thoroughly documented in the extended GAEF (see Additional file 3: Fig.…”

“…15e17 In addition, all pneumatonometry measurements were performed within the first 5 minutes of general anesthesia to minimize its possible effect on IOP measurements. 18,19 The prediction model based on inferotemporal scleral pneumatonometry may be more practical for the following reasons. First, consistent with previous studies on adults, 5e7 inferotemporal pneumatonometry here also showed stronger correlation with corneal pneumatonometry compared with inferonasal pneumatonometry.…”

“…It disrupts the auto-regulatory mechanism of choroidal circulation and leads to an increase in intraocular blood volume [58]. Besides, most anesthetics decrease intracerebral pressure, which is correlated to IOP [59]. Endotracheal intubation may reduce the venous drainage of the head due to intrathoracic pressure increase, which ultimately increases the IOP [55].…”
