The asymmetric impact of technological innovation on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in South Africa from 1960 to 2020 is evaluated in this study. We apply the newly established quantile autoregressive distributed lag (QARDL) methodology to deal with distributional asymmetry based on the location of CO2 emissions within its own distribution. This distinguishes our analysis from earlier studies in the following way. In contrast to other studies, this research uses the QARDL technique to assess the long-term stability across the quantiles, resulting in a more adaptable econometric analysis than the traditional frameworks. In order to capture the trade share in South Africa’s GDP and the quantity of trade compared to world trade, we employ a novel measure of trade openness. We find that 1) technological innovation helps reduce CO2 emissions in the short term and over the long term; 2) the scale effect worsens CO2 emissions, whereas the technique effect enhances it, supporting the existence of an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis; 3) energy consumption, foreign direct investment (FDI), and industrial added value degrade environmental quality; and 4) increasing trade openness is glaringly harmful to the environment over the long term, despite being beneficial in the short term; 5) there are long-term, asymmetric linkages between CO2 emissions, scale effect, technique effect, technological innovation, energy use, FDI, and trade openness; 6) industrial value-added, scale effect, technique effect, technical innovation, energy usage, FDI, and trade openness Granger-cause CO2 emissions over the medium, long, and short terms indicate the significance of these variables in determining CO2 emissions. Based on our empirical findings, this study makes the case that South Africa’s government and policymakers should consider the importance of innovative technologies as a sustainable source of advancements in attaining energy security and promoting ecological integrity in the nation.

The industrial land supply impacts regional high-quality development, with various impacts across sectors. Considering China’s Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB), this paper uses entropy weighting, spatial analysis, and the spatial Durbin model for spatiotemporal and regional analysis of the high-quality development level (HDL) and its spatial correlation with the industrial land supply. (1) The annual average HDL in all cities of the YREB increases, the regional HDL is spatially unbalanced and decreases from downstream–midstream–upstream, and HDL overlaps with economic development spatiotemporally. (2) The increase in high-tech industrial land supply promotes local HDL, and the raw material industrial land supply promotes HDL more indirectly than directly. (3) The land supply of the industrial supporting service, processing, food and light textile, and raw material industries has significant indirect effects. Processing has the strongest positive spillover effect, and food and light textile has a significant negative spillover effect. The HDL equilibrium in the YREB increased from 2010 to 2019, and the clustering of the processing, industrial supporting service, and food and light textile industries aggravated the spatial imbalance. (4) The regional structure and layout of the industrial land supply should be optimized to promote the HDL of the YREB.

This paper explores the effects of environmental regulation (ER) and rural residents’ health investment (RRHI) on agricultural eco-efficiency (AEE) to provide a reference for the Chinese Government and other developing countries for implementing environmental regulation policies and to provide new paths to further improve green development in agriculture. Using the panel data of 31 Chinese provinces from 2009–2018, the Super-SBM model was used to measure AEE. The role of ER on AEE was analyzed based on panel two-way fixed effects with endogeneity treatment and a robustness test, and this mediating effect analysis was conducted to analyze the role of RRHI in ER and AEE, examining the extent of the effect of ER on AEE in three regions of China—eastern, central and western—using a heterogeneity analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) from a national perspective, ER has a significant positive impact on AEE, showing that ER is effective at this stage; (2) when RRHI is used as a mediating variable, the rising ER’s intensity can promote AEE by increasing RRHI; and (3) the results of the heterogeneity analysis show that ER has the greatest impact on AEE in the economically developed eastern region; the western region with a weaker level of economic development is in second place. However, ER has a negative impact on AEE in the central region with a medium level of economic development. Thus, the impact of ER on AEE will show great differences depending on the stage of economic development.
