Does adjusting for recall in trend analysis affect coverage estimates for maternal and child health indicators? An analysis of DHS and MICS survey data

Abstract: BackgroundThe Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) are the major data sources in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for evaluating health service coverage. For certain maternal and child health (MCH) indicators, the two surveys use different recall periods: 5 years for DHS and 2 years for MICS.ObjectiveWe explored whether the different recall periods for DHS and MICS affect coverage trend analyses as well as missing data and coverage estimates.DesignsWe estim… Show more

“…Measuring these constructs in children is complex because of their sub jective and con textspecific nature. Collecting information and capturing the voices and experiences of children is also difficult; parents or caregivers are often asked to provide infor mation about their children, but this might introduce bias because of long recall periods 338 or social acceptability. 339 Nonetheless, the global medical community has called for indicators of people's participa tion in health systems to be included in the next set of SDGs.…”

“…The survey included experiences of mothers with a live birth five years preceding a survey leaving out mothers with other birth outcomes or those who might have died during pregnancy or delivery resulting in selection bias. Due to the retrospective nature of the collected data, there is a risk of recall bias which might potentially lead to inaccurate results [69]. The study was limited to the socioeconomic and demographic factors collected during the household surveys leaving out factors like availability, cost of care and skilled health workers.…”

“…There are three main measurements of assessing the vaccination coverage [5]: electronic registry of immunization such as the Zhejiang provincial immunization information system [8], which covers all vaccination clinics in Zhejiang Province and records the demographic and vaccination information of all children under 7 years of age, administrative records like information routinely collected during service delivery, and population-based household surveys such as demographic and health surveys administered in many countries [9,10]. However, each method has advantages and disadvantages.…”
