Condom Use, Contraceptive Methods, and Religiosity among Youths of Low Socioeconomic Level

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the use of condoms and other contraceptive methods and religiosity/spirituality among youths of a low socioeconomic level in Porto Alegre. 1013 youths, between 12-24 years of age participated, responding to a personal questionnaire containing 109 items. Results show that 53.5% of these youths had already had their first sexual encounter, 55% of which had this experience before the age of 15. The majority (42.8%) claimed to be Catholic, and 26.7% said they believe in God, but were not religious. There appeared no significant difference in the use of condoms in relation to the level of religiosity, however, men used this method more than women to avoid AIDS and as a contraceptive. Women used other contraceptive methods more frequently, and there were no cases of exclusive use of methods permitted by the major religions (natural methods). This study revealed a high level of condom use (more than 80%) among both religious and non-religious youths. Los participantes eran 1013 jóvenes de entre 12-24 años de edad, que completaron un cuestionario auto-administrado de 109 ítems. Los resultados mostraron que el 53,5% ya habían tenido su primera relación sexual, entre ellos, el 55% la había tenido antes de cumplir los 15 años. La mayoría de ellos eran Católicos (42.8%), y el 26.7% decían que creían en Dios pero no tenían una religión. No se encontraron diferencias significativas en el uso del condón según el nivel de religiosidad de los grupos, aunque los hombres usan el condón más que las mujeres para evitar el SIDA y como método anticonceptivo. Las mujeres emplean otros métodos anticonceptivos, y no hubo casos que empleasen únicamente los métodos permitidos por la mayoría de las religiones (los métodos naturales). El estudio mostró un alto nivel en el uso del condón (más del 80%) tanto en los jóvenes religiosos como en los no religiosos. objectIve. To identify factors associated with unprotected sexual activity in females under the age of 15 years. Methods. Cross-sectional observational study of sexually active adolescents under the age of 15 seen at a public outpatient gynecology clinic. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews (personal information and data on sexuality), clinical examination, and laboratory tests for diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections. Data were analyzed by frequency testing, association of variables (with p <0.05) and multiple correspondence analysis. results. One hundred sexually active adolescents between the ages of 11 and 14 were interviewed and examined. Of these, 71% declared themselves black; one-third were behind in school; 80% began sexual activity before the age of 13; 58% reported having been victims of violence within the family environment, and 13% had suffered sexual abuse; 77% did not use condoms regularly; and 22% had STIs. Unprotected sexual activity was more frequent with first sexual intercourse before the age of 13, commercial sexual exploitation, multiple sexual partners, intrafamily violence and school delay, as well as black race, unexpected pregnancy, and STIs. conclusIon. The multiple types of violence suffered by teenagers, including structural, intrafamily, and sexual violence, increase their vulnerability to early, unprotected sexual activity and to STIs and unexpected pregnancy. The synergistic effects of poverty, low educational achievement, and low selfesteem reduces the odds that adolescents will build the tools required for self-protection and exposes them to further victimization outside the family environment.

Objetivou-se identificar o uso de métodos anticoncepcionais entre adolescentes, ingressantes de uma universidade pública paulista e descrever o perfil desses universitários quanto a algumas características sócio-demográficas. Foi utilizado um questionário e a amostra foi composta por 295 adolescentes. Relataram ter iniciado atividade sexual 48,8%. A idade média para o início foi aos 17 anos, e a maioria relatou ter usado um método contraceptivo. O método mais utilizado foi o preservativo e este em combinação com a pílula, principalmente. Observou-se que os adolescentes buscam informações, seja através de profissionais da saúde, professores, ou através de livros, com destaque para a mídia. Conclui-se que os universitários iniciam atividade sexual mais tardiamente e buscam conhecimento sobre anticoncepção.
