“…Em 1910, quando apresentou à Academia Nacional de Medicina os primeiros resultados do estudo da doença que posteriormente levaria seu nome, Carlos Chagas lançou a hipótese de que o bócio endêmico nas áreas rurais do Brasil nada tinha a ver com o bócio que atingia os habitantes da Europa (Kropf, 2009a).
