Show more

“…Benznidazole is being increasingly prescribed for the antiparasitic treatment of Chagas disease, not only the expansion of indications based on evidence, but also as a result of increased demand in endemic and non-endemic countries with better structure of their national surveillance and healthcare systems (38) (294) (295) . Benznidazole (Class 1, level of evidence b) is produced as tablets of 100mg and 50mg (adults) and 12.5mg and 50mg (children) (20) (42) (313) . In Brazil, only the 100mg and 12.5mg tablets are available in the SUS network.…”

“…PCR is an alternative option to indirect methods (xenodiagnosis and blood culture) in the parasitologic evaluation as a treatment failure criterion after completing antiparasitic treatment (104) (313) . However, there are still limitations on the availability and standardization of techniques in the health networks of endemic countries (313) .…”

“…The molecular biology by means of the polymerase chain reaction technique, is already well studied in Chagas disese 101 , but has not been a frequently utilized method for indirect research of T. cruzi in the presence of the co-infection with HIV/AIDS. However, it was described in two (0.7%) cases used for diagnostic confirmation in peripheral blood 92 , and on the study of the parasite in duodenal biopsies in four co-infected individuals 51 .…”

“…On the other hand, molecular technology demonstrates the presence of parasites based on their antigenic components or DNA segments (3). These tests are not influenced by environmental factors that usually can interfere with the results of a stool test, for example, thus ensuring highly reliable results (4).…”
