Do rice varieties matter? Climate change adaptation and livelihood diversification among rural smallholder households in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam

Abstract: While it is known that the threat of climatic stresses induces rural smallholders to diversify their livelihood strategies, a consensus has not been reached as to what type of stress induces which strategy, especially in the Mekong Delta Region (MDR) of Vietnam. Primary data were obtained from randomly selected 405 households producing rice (Oryza sativa L.) in three provinces in the MDR. Simpson's diversity index was used to assess the level of diversification, multivariate probit regression was utilized to e… Show more

“…Literature suggests that farmers hesitate to invest in expensive technologies in the presence of climate [68,125,126]. For instance, farmers in low rainfall conditions used traditional varieties instead of improved seeds [68,149]. Furthermore, Gebremariam and Tesfaye [125] found in rural Ethiopia that production damage and health shocks exerted negative effects on the adoption of costly innovations (e.g., improved seeds and synthetic fertilizer).…”

“…Some farmers have investigated farming equipment such as agrimotor and tractors to serve themselves and provide services to other families. These main assets directly or indirectly affect farming activities, improving quality and productivity [32].…”

“…α k , β k and γ k are parameters to be estimated; and ε k is an error term. Equation ( 1) is estimated by the Geweke-Hajivassiliou-Keane (GHK) simulation method for maximum likelihood estimation, using the Stata commands "mvprobit" [55,56]. 2, which reveals farmers' average age to be 47 years, the majority being middle-aged and old-aged.…”
