This study examines whether and how business strategies affect firms' sustainable development from the view of green innovation. We show that firms following prospector strategy engage in less sustainable development behaviors than those following defender strategies. The negative relation between business strategy and green innovation continues to hold when addressing robustness with alternatives of business strategy and green innovation and addressing potential endogeneity with instrumental variable. We further find that political connection strengthens whereas environmental regulation weakens the negative relation between business strategy and green innovation. Finally, we explore the economic consequences of green innovation caused by strategic differences. Regrettably, the win–win situation of environment and development does not come true.

Role of Low-carbon Technology Innovation in Environmental Performance of Manufacturing: Evidence From Oecd Countries

Climate change disrupts the balance of natural ecosystems and threatens the sustainable development of human society. As the leading industry in many countries, manufacturing promotes economic development; unfortunately, it also emits large quantities of greenhouse gases. Thus, it is necessary to transform the production pattern of manufacturing into green production. Although technology innovation is the only way to tackle the issue, different types of technology innovation may lead to different environmental performances. We argue that low-carbon technology innovation (LCTI) is the key to green production. Using data of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries from 1990 to 2014, we use the patent-stock method to measure LCTI levels and analyze its development trend in OECD countries. Based on the shepherd distance function, we measure carbon efficiency and carbon productivity by the fixed-effect Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) model. Then we investigate the effect of LCTI on carbon emission efficiency in manufacturing by the fixed-effect regression model. After controlling some variables, evidence shows a significant positive influence of LCTI on the environmental performance of manufacturing. The level of LCTI constantly increased in OECD countries during the study period. Among these countries, the level of low-carbon technology in the chemical industry is the highest; and in most of the countries, the low-carbon technology of production process grows fastest. Policy implications are further discussed.

The rapid growth of China’s renewable energy market and production capacity has attracted worldwide attention. Environmental policy integration in the energy sector and the institutional background behind this growth have seen little examination. In this paper, we present an assessment of environmental policy integration (EPI), attempting to reveal how the institutional factors facilitate EPI in the energy sector of China. A qualitative analytical framework involving normative, organizational, and procedural dimensions, incorporating multiple pieces of quantitative evidence, was applied. The results show that an ambitious and long-term normative vision covering political will, social backing, and cultural foundation in China is indispensable to the EPI process in the energy sector. The energy agency’s trans-sector cooperation in policy-making has been established to overcome the sectoral compartmentalization. China’s EPI in energy has a relatively complete and stable regulating system but, at the same time, it is expected to obtain more benefits from market cultivation and public participation. In this process, advantages such as the co-evolution of the green energy innovation, market, and society do exist; however, this market-oriented approach may bring the risk of economic and societal disturbances when interest-driven production capacity growth far surpasses market and societal requirements. This potential risk needs to be handled and prevented by strong governmental guidance and support. The continuous ambitious and long-term visioning of EPI, sufficient governmental funds, and a proactive industrial plan for renewable energy, are suggested.
