Do reciprocal relationships between academic workload and self-regulated learning predict medical freshmen’s achievement? A longitudinal study on the educational transition from secondary school to medical school

Abstract: One of the most important factors that makes the transition from secondary school to medical school challenging is the inability to put in the study time that a medical school curriculum demands. The implementation of regulated learning is essential for students to cope with medical course environment and succeed. This study aimed to investigate the reciprocal relationships between self-regulated learning skills (SRLS) and academic workload (AW) across secondary school to medical school transition. Freshmen en… Show more

“…Participants in the Java-Bali Region face a higher workload and stress as front-liners in managing patients during the COVID-19 pandemic (as health educators, contact tracers, vaccinators, etc.). This aligns with other findings suggesting that an optimal workload determines the quality of students' SRL in the early transition and adaptation phases (Barbosa et al, 2018).…”

“…Indeed, several studies found Self-Regulated Learning as a factor to enhance the learning process of the university students in the area of health sciences (Cho et al, 2017;van Lankveld et al, 2019). Other studies (Barbosa et al, 2018;Versteeg et al, 2019) showed something similar, where learning-centered approach was influencing positively the learning process in this area.…”

“…Similarly, the self-report NASA-TLX measure of perceived workload has been used in literally thousands of studies (as evidenced by over 25,000 results from a recent Google Scholar search using ‘NASA-TLX’), and has been a useful predictor of performance in surgical (Yurko et al, 2010), academic (Barbosa et al, 2018), and air traffic control (Durso et al, 1998) settings. Thus, we are optimistic that our findings will provide a good basis for additional research documenting how selective video speeding may allow for efficient learning that users will engage with in real-world settings.…”
