Do Plain Packaging and Pictorial Warnings Affect Smokers' and Non‐Smokers' Behavioral Intentions?

Abstract: This research considers how tobacco warnings, plain packaging, and interactions between these measures affect behavioral intentions. While existing literature shows the superiority of pictorial warning labels (PWLs) vs. text-only tobacco warnings, few studies have examined the interaction effects of warnings and plain packaging on smoking intentions. Nor has earlier work examined the influence of smoking status (smoker vs. non-smoker) on both warning and plain packaging effectiveness. Our experimental study ad… Show more

“…The effect of type of pack on the effectiveness of pictorial and threatening warnings Studies showed that plain packs increase visual attention to warnings (Maynard et al, 2013), are less appealing, reduce attitude toward tobacco brand (McCool et al, 2012;Dunlop et al, 2014;Gallopel-Morvan et al, 2018), increase quitting intentions and reduce tobacco consumption (Hoek et al, 2011b;Durkin et al, 2015;Moodie and Ford, 2011). However, no study has yet been performed to examine plain pack effects on negative emotions elicited by PTW, whereas emotion plays a key role in PTW effectiveness.…”

“…The comparison between the three control conditions will work as a replication of recent work 33 on the independent effect of plain versus branded packages and hence serve as an independent validation of our methodology, especially the incentivised mechanism. We will use both the typical questionnaire measures used in this type of study and our own methodology based on financial incentives (WTP).…”

“…Following recent studies that have examined the combined effect of the plain pack and the warnings, [31][32][33] we will seek to evaluate whether the efficacy of warnings is enhanced by the plain packaging. Indeed, it is possible that such a packaging, without the advertising communication of the brand, reinforces the efficacy of warnings.…”

“…Plain packaging and pictorial warning independently and synergistically acts alter smoking behaviour among non-smokers. 19 In comparison to text warning, implementation of pictorial warning is more effective to reduce/quit smoking and it to increase support for plain packaging. 20 Pictorial warning also is crucial to deliver its message especially for countries with low literacy rates and for younger smokers.…”
