Do graphical search interfaces support effective search for and evaluation of digital library resources

Abstract: This paper explores the cognitive processes and online behaviors in which preservice teachers engage when seeking educational resources for classroom instruction. Participants used graphical and keyword search interfaces provided by a large-scale digital library (NSDL.org) and a keyword search interface from a large, commercial search engine (Google.com) to complete searches for online materials that would support classroom instruction. Overall, findings from the current work indicate that a graphical search i… Show more

“…The more users were able to focus on results inspection instead of querying and on working with information in documents found instead of result inspection, the better this seemed to be to the process of construction for proceeding in the task [cf. 30, 39, 42]. Also a recent query log study [47] seems to hint at this.…”

“…Thus, the dependent factor used does not represent search effectiveness, but the characteristics of cognitive processing in evaluating search results. Butcher and colleagues [42] studied how pre-service teachers search educational material for classroom instructions using two different interfaces. The three search tasks in the study emulated online, daily instructional planning activities.…”

“…Increased time use is here an indirect proof of increasing knowledge (cf. Butcher et al, 2011). In addition, an expert will count the concepts that have been identified for the question of Task 4 for scoring.…”

“…The results offer insight for understanding how well each tactic observed is supported by each part of the interfaces. Butcher et al (2011) investigate the effectiveness of graphical search tools to support teachers with limited domain knowledge to evaluate the content of educational resources. The aim of the study is to analyze the cognitive processing load and the thinking level during the online search process when using the graphical and keyword search interfaces.…”
