DNA Interaction Studies of a Copper (II) Complex Containing an Antiviral Drug, Valacyclovir: The Effect of Metal Center on the Mode of Binding

Abstract: The water-soluble complex, [Cu(Val)(2)(NO(3))(2)]; in which Val = valacyclovir, an antiviral drug, has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, furier transfer-infrared, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR), and UV-Vis techniques. The binding of this Cu (II) complex to calf thymus DNA was investigated using fluorimetry, spectrophotometry, circular dichroism, and viscosimetry. In fluorimetric studies, the enthalpy and entropy of the reaction between the complex and calf-thymus DNA (CT-DN… Show more

“…The binding of compounds 1−5 to DNA was then investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. [27] Absorption spectra were recorded for 25 μM solutions of each complex to which were added increasing amounts of ct-DNA (from 1 to 25 μM). The corresponding spectra (range 190-400 nm) for 1, which are representative for all the other compounds (viz.…”

“…Molecular absorption spectroscopy in the UV-vis region is an efficient tool for investigating the binding of compounds to DNA [50,51]. The UV-vis absorption spectra of compounds 1-10 are significantly perturbed by the addition of increasing amounts of DNA.…”

“…Molecular absorption spectroscopy in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible (vis) region is an efficient tool to investigate the binding of (coordination) compounds to DNA. 51,52 Therefore, absorption spectra have been recorded at a constant complex concentration of 25 μM and with increasing amounts of calf-thymus DNA (ct-DNA), from 0 to 100 μM. The corresponding spectra for 1 are shown in Fig.…”
