DNA-decorated carbon nanotubes for chemical sensing

Abstract: We demonstrate a versatile class of nanoscale chemical sensors based on single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) for chemical recognition and single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors (SWNT FETs) for electronic read-out. SWNT FETs with a nanoscale coating of ssDNA respond to vapours that cause no detectable conductivity change in bare devices. The gases tested are methanol, trimethylamine, propionic acid, dimethylmethylphosphonate and dinitrotoluene. Sensor responses differ in sign and magnitude for different … Show more

“…Knowing the structures of the characteristic volatiles will provide a guide for creation of compound-specific sensors [42][43][44]. Fitted to electronic nose ("enose") devices, sensors responding to bacterial volatiles [45][46][47][48][49] would aid physicians in choosing antibiotics in real time, similar to the rapid strep test used for acute pharyngitis [50].…”

“…The ss-DNA functionalized CNT devices showed a significant current modulation as high as 20-30% versus 0-1% in bare control CNT devices at the same exposure dose. 480,481 Highly selective interactions between ss-DNA and CNTs of different chiralities may provide further tunability for this class of chemical sensors. 95 In an effort to simplify fabrication, research has also been devoted to using CNT thin Specificity issues were addressed to some extent by implementing both covalent 483 and non-covalent 484 functionalizations of these CNT thin films.…”

“…We find that devices fabricated using the PMGI/S1813 bilayer show an ON-state resistance of 250 k ± 100 k , a range that is essentially identical to the best results that we and other groups have obtained using EBL. [16][17][18] In contrast, samples made using S1813 alone had a much larger ON-state resistance with considerably larger fluctuations (5.0 M ± 3.0 M ). This striking difference in contact resistance is attributed to the presence of scum from the S1813 photoresist on the SWNT sidewall and on the substrate surface when the PMGI buffer layer is omitted.…”
