DNA damage, oxidative stress, decreased viability and motility in common carp (Cyprinuscarpio L.) spermatozoa induced by tryptophan, phenylalanine and cysteine amino acids during short-term storage

Abstract: Free amino acids are found in spermatozoa and seminal plasma. Their qualitative and quantitative presence have been affected by many factors. Under in vitro storage conditions, their effects on spermatozoa in animal species and also human have been concerned over the last decades. In this study, the effects of tryptophan, phenylalanine and cysteine on DNA integrity, lipid peroxidation, viability and motility parameters in spermatozoa of the common carp (Cyprinuscarpio) were assessed during short-term storage. … Show more

“…More recently, various studies have been performed on different fish species to examine the benefits of such antioxidant properties and investigate the effect of adding amino acids to semen extenders (Table 4). Such works focused on A. baerii and A. ruthenus (Stejskal et al., 2008), O. mykiss (Ekici et al., 2012), H. huso (Aramli & Nazari, 2016) and C. carpio (Kanyilmaz & İnanan, 2020). Motility, membrane stability and semen functionality in fish, similar to mammals, are also affected by oxidative stress due to the generation of reactive oxygen species during dilution in the extender media and cooling process.…”
