DN1p Circadian Neurons Coordinate Acute Light and PDF Inputs to Produce Robust Daily Behavior in Drosophila

Abstract: Summary Background Daily behaviors in animals are determined by the interplay between internal timing signals from circadian clocks and environmental stimuli such as light. How these signals are integrated to produce timely and adaptive behavior is unclear. The fruit fly Drosophila exhibits clock-driven activity increases that anticipate dawn and dusk and free-running rhythms under constant conditions. Flies also respond to the onset of light and dark with acute increases in activity. Results Mutants of a n… Show more

“…The gl 60j mutant exhibits the developmental loss of all external opsin-based photoreceptors, HB eyelet, and the DN1p subset of circadian neurons (17,32,33). The DN1s have been implicated for light-evoked morning arousal activity (50,51). HB eyelet cells project into the accessory medulla and to the LNvs (52,53).…”

“…In this way, morning and evening functions shift according to seasonal changes of photoperiod. Indeed, different subsets of these clock neurons are also responsive to temperature [160][161][162][163] and so pacemaker neurons could conceivably be relevant for photoperiodism and diapause. The evidence supporting a role for the circadian clock in diapause comes from studies of clock mutants, predominantly in Drosophila.…”

“…Although LN v s are sufficient to drive rest:activity rhythms in constant darkness (DD) and set the period of the clock, robust behavioral and physiological rhythms are an emergent property of the clock network as a whole (Peng et al 2003;Guo et al 2014;Yao and Shafer 2014;Roberts et al 2015;Liang et al 2016). LN d s and DN1 neurons are targets of PDF and play roles in regulating multiple features of circadian behavior, including rhythm strength, phase, and circadian period (Murad et al 2007;Lear et al 2009;Zhang et al 2010;Guo et al 2014).…”
