Background Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping using bulk segregants is an effective approach for identifying genetic variants associated with phenotypes of interest in model organisms. By exploiting next-generation sequencing technology, the QTL mapping accuracy can be improved significantly, providing a valuable means to annotate new genetic variants. However, setting up a comprehensive analysis framework for this purpose is a time-consuming and error-prone task, posing many challenges for scientists with limited experience in this domain. Results Here, we present BSA4Yeast, a comprehensive web application for QTL mapping via bulk segregant analysis of yeast sequencing data. The software provides an automated and efficiency-optimized data processing, up-to-date functional annotations, and an interactive web interface to explore identified QTLs. Conclusions BSA4Yeast enables researchers to identify plausible candidate genes in QTL regions efficiently in order to validate their genetic variations experimentally as causative for a phenotype of interest. A Deep Learning-Based Decision Support Tool for Plant-Parasitic Nematode Management

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN), especially sedentary endoparasitic nematodes like root-knot nematodes (RKN), pose a significant threat to major crops and vegetables. They are responsible for causing substantial yield losses, leading to economic consequences, and impacting the global food supply. The identification of PPNs and the assessment of their population is a tedious and time-consuming task. This study developed a state-of-the-art deep learning model-based decision support tool to detect and estimate the nematode population. The decision support tool is integrated with the fast inferencing YOLOv5 model and used pretrained nematode weight to detect plant-parasitic nematodes (juveniles) and eggs. The performance of the YOLOv5-640 model at detecting RKN eggs was as follows: precision = 0.992; recall = 0.959; F1-score = 0.975; and mAP = 0.979. YOLOv5-640 was able to detect RKN eggs with an inference time of 3.9 milliseconds, which is faster compared to other detection methods. The deep learning framework was integrated into a user-friendly web application system to build a fast and reliable prototype nematode decision support tool (NemDST). The NemDST facilitates farmers/growers to input image data, assess the nematode population, track the population growths, and recommend immediate actions necessary to control nematode infestation. This tool has the potential for rapid assessment of the nematode population to minimise crop yield losses and enhance financial outcomes.

Smart5Grid exploits the robustness and flexibility enabled by the 5-th generation (5G) mobile network technology to contribute an open and adaptable platform for reliable testing, validation, and operation of Network Applications (NetApps), addressing the challenges of the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) production and those of the operation of the active power distribution ecosystem, in particular. Smart5Grid aims to support current energy sector and future smart grid stakeholders through the adaptation of 5G networks and the support of the respective NetApps that will be developed and validated on real power grid facilities. Smart5Grid intends to provide a more secure, flexible, efficient, scalable and real-time communication framework for modern smart grids. Through remote inspection and control of automatically delimited working areas, the capabilities of the created Smart5Grid 5G platform will facilitate the improvement of working conditions for power grid maintenance crews and inspection workers. In this paper, we presented the methodology of the Smart5Grid project, which will enable remote inspections in high-risk areas and real-time execution by supporting various distribution network applications and providing accurate results and information on the operational condition of power grid assets via augmented reality. If maintenance work is undertaken, realtime control will be enabled to support working procedures remotely and automatically, without putting employees in potentially harmful conditions.
