“…This Gram‐positive bacterium is also considered as a severe zoonotic and foodborne pathogen (Ferrando et al., 2015). S. suis currently includes 29 recognized serotypes based on the antigenicity of capsular polysaccharides (CPS) and 28 novel cps loci (NCL) (Chz, NCL1‐26 and NCL21') (Bojarska et al., 2020; Huang et al., 2019; Pan et al., 2015; Zheng et al., 2017). At least ten serotypes have been reported that can cause human infections, consisting of serotypes 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 24 and 31 (Liang et al., 2021).…”

“…To date, serotyping is an important routine diagnostic procedure and is widely used for subtyping S. suis strains. Among 29 confirmed serotypes (1–19, 21, 23–25, 27–31, and 1/2) and 28 novel cps types [ 2–5 ], serotype 2 is most frequently isolated from clinical cases in swine and humans worldwide [ 1 , 6 ]. Two outbreaks featured by high rates of streptococcal toxic-shock-like syndrome (STSLS) were caused by S. suis serotype 2 sequence type (ST)7 strains in China [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…In comparison with the serotype distribution in other countries, serotype 2 is the most prevalent in China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Spain, Italy, France, Poland and White Russia 20 . The second prevalent serotype varies with countries, which are mostly serotypes 3 and 4 in Korea, serotypes 3, 1/2 and 7 in the U.S., serotype 9 in the Netherlands, and serotypes 1 and 14 in Britain 21 , 22 . Our result is close to the data reported in the U.S., in which serotypes 3 and 7 are more prevalent.…”
