An experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth of seedling tubers produced from true potato seed (TPS) for selection of superior clones to produce seed tubers in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. A completely randomised design (CRD) was used. The treatment consisted of 15 seed tuber clones produced from TPS and replicated 3 times; each replicate consisted of five plant stands. The parameters assessed included establishment rate, number of above-ground stems per plant, number of leaves per plant, mean plant height, mean number of tubers, mean tuber weight and dry matter content. Generally, the clones varied significantly in all the vegetative and yield parameters assessed. Clones 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 11 had a significantly higher number of tubers than clone 10. Clone 1 had the highest mean tuber weight while clone 4 had the least. Clone 10 which had the lowest number of tubers resulted in the highest dry matter. It is concluded that clones 1,2,3,5,6,7 and 11 can be selected for high multiplication ratio, yield and dry matter content.

The purpose of this study was to determine the potato breeding lines that show superior agricultural characteristics and can be variety candidate by selection. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete blocks design in the both years with four replications. In the study, 20 potato breeding lines developed by Selcuk University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Field Crops and 18 registered varieties as plant material were used in the first year. In the second year, the study continued with 7 breeding lines and 8 registered varieties that selected at the end of the first year. In the study; emergence period (days), maturation time (1-9 scale), plant growth type (3-7 scale), plant height (cm), number of main stems per plant (pieces), number of tubers per hill (pieces), average tuber weight (g), tuber yield per hill (g), total, large, medium small, discarded tuber yields (kg da-1), number of eyes per tuber (piece), tuber shape (1-9 scale) were examined. In all field parameters, the differences between genotype in 2019 and between location, genotype and location x genotype interactions in 2020 were found to be statistically significant. The total tuber yield varied between 2001.2 kg da-1 and 6029.8 kg da-1 in 2019. For the year 2020; It was determined between 2766.4 kg da-1 and 5598.2 kg da-1. Among the potato breeding lines in both years, ELAF11 (6029.8 kg da-1 in 2019; 4939.9 kg da-1 as genotype average in 2020) was the leading lines in terms of total tuber yield per decare. Overall, the potato breeding lines that gave the best results differed. ELAF11 and ELAF10 lines were determined as potato breeding lines with high tuber yield.

Application of hormones and mechanical treatment on breaking the dormancy of G0 “Granola” (Solanum tuberosum) minitubers in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Asian J Agric 7: 8-14. The study was conducted to identify the best treatment combination for dormancy breaking and sprouting quality for “Granola” minitubers. A comparison was made by wounding and dipping the one-week-old minitubers in different levels of GA3 and BAP (0, 50, and 100 mg/L). Results showed that either 50 or 100 mg/L of GA3 solely influenced the average number of sprouts in minitubers while wounding minitubers highly influenced tuber weight loss by increasing the percent loss in minitubers. In combination with factors such as wounding and 50 mg/L of GA3, it positively influenced the average sprout length, fresh mass of sprouts, and dry mass of sprouts. While the dormancy period and days to dormancy break time (50% minitubers achieved > 2 mm sprout length) were reduced for more than 45 and 50 days, respectively, when factors were combined, such as wounding the minitubers and dipping in the treatment solution having 50 mg/L GA3 and 50 mg/L BAP. The levels of GA3 and BAP (50 and 100 mg/L) showed no significant differences in achieving early dormancy breaking and high sprouting quality in G0 minitubers. Overall, for most of the results in this study, wounding combined with the application of 50 mg/L GA3 was commendable for dormancy breaking and attaining high sprouting quality of “Granola” minitubers.
