“…The waxy gene of rice encodes starch granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS, or more commonly, Wx protein) which is responsible for the synthesis of amylose in rice endosperm and pollen (Okagaki and Wessler, 1988). We have previously cloned and sequenced the Wx gene from three rice cultivars: Oryza sativa sub-species japonica Hanfeng cultivar (Wang et al, 1990), Oryza sativa sub-species indica 232 cultivar, and Oryza sativa L.f. spontanea Dongxiang which is wild rice (Wang et al, 1994). The coding region of the Wx gene from the Hanfeng cultivar consists of 13 exons interrupted by 12 introns (Wang et al, 1994).…”
