“…As the results are presented as the proportion of the total cultivable bacterial biota, they could be viewed, not as an increase of the second most predominent species that happened to be present (staphylococci or streptococci) but rather as a decrease in the lactobacilli population. We have previously observed that another stress, transportation [6], results in a decrease in the oral lactobacilli population. Similar results were also observed by others concerning the population of lactobacilli found in the fecal biota [30,32].…”

“…It has been observed that the proportion of Lactobacillus sp. decreases in stressed mice (6,33,35). Nude mice are more susceptible to temperature variations.…”

“…While studying the distribution of the resident oral bacterial biota of the mouse, we observed an unidentified Streptococcus that eventually dominated the microbiota (8). It was found that the strain originated from Jackson Laboratory mice and was not present in Charles River mice.…”

“…To study the fundamental mechanisms imphcated in the maintenance of homeostasis in the oral cavity, we chose the murine model (1,27,33). Our previous results indicated that the mierobial biota of the oral cavity of BALB/c mice is simple, being limited to only 18 species, among which only a few predominate at any one time: Lactobacillus murinus, staphylococci, Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus sanguis II (now Streptococcus oralis) (8,33). Among other mouse strains, a few other bacterial species (21 different species) were detected, but the overall number remained relatively low, confirming the selectivity of this environment (8).…”
