Distribution of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Belgian part of the North Sea

Abstract: The invasive ctenophore, Mnemiopsis leidyi, which had its first mass occurrence in Limfjorden (Denmark) . During that period, copepods and other mesozooplankton organisms were virtually absent while ciliates were a substantial part of the zooplankton biomass. In "pre-Mnemiopsis years", there seems to have been large variability in the grazing impact on zooplankton depending on the seasonal abundance of A. aurita. With the addition of the second carnivore M. leidyi, however, additional predation pressure caus… Show more

“…Since then, high densities have been noted in Limfjorden (Denmark, 867 ind m À3 ; Riisgård et al, 2007) and the Wadden Sea (The Netherlands, 610 ind m À3 ; van Walraven et al, 2013). Hitherto, M. leidyi has been observed from the English Channel (Antajan et al, 2014) and the Southern North Sea (Van Ginderdeuren et al, 2012;van Walraven et al, 2013) up to the German Bight and Danish territorial waters (Boersma et al, 2007;Javidpour et al, 2009a;Riisgård et al, 2012). It has not yet been encountered along the UK coasts (Antajan et al, unpublished data;Collingridge et al, 2014).…”

“…By the 2000s, M. leidyi spanned the entirety of the Mediterranean Sea (Fuentes et al 2009;Boero et al 2009;Galil et al 2009;Shiganova and Malej 2009;Fuentes et al 2010). It was first found in northern Europe in 2006, both in the North Sea (Faasse and Bayha 2006;Hansson 2006;Boersma et al 2007) and the Baltic Sea (Javidpour et al 2006), subsequently spreading to other areas of both seas, as well as adjacent water bodies (Oliveira 2007;Tendal et al 2007;Janas and Zgrundo 2007;Van Ginderdeuren et al 2012;Antajan et al 2014).…”

“…Both the northward and westward distribution limits in the North Sea are currently not well defined and subject to ongoing research, with the most recent reports from the Belgian coast (Van Ginderdeuren et al 2012). In the Baltic the eastward distribution limit has been indentified as the Bornholm Basin (Gorokhova et al 2009, Reusch et al 2010, Schaber et al 2011.…”
