São Gonçalo channel connects Patos and Mirim lagoons, in South Brazil. This ecosystem is 70 Km long, and is a major regional source of urban and agricultural water supply, mainly for the municipality of Rio Grande, with ca. 250 thousand citizens. This study aims to diagnose their water quality by measuring benthic invertebrates (Shannon-Wiener diversity index, richness and abundance), use of a BMWP biotic index, physical and chemical evaluation, and applying a trophic state index. The BMWP index showed predominance of taxa indicating altered conditions and polluted waters (Sarcodina and Hydracarina). The abiotic variables indicated eutrophicated waters, chlorophyll values characteristic of eutrophic environments (>2.9 µg. L -1 ), low N:P rates in sediment and water, with nitrogen limitation during most periods studied. The results of trophic state indexes indicated mesotrophic and eutrophic conditions, reaching hipereutrophic periods. The highest TSI were in Piratini river, in April 2009 and February 2011, coinciding with rice crop leaching. These results regarding nutrient concentration, nitrogen and phosphorus stoichiometry and biotic index support the need to evaluate the occupation of the surroundings of this water supply.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for all forms of life, among the various naturally occurring P species, orthophosphate (PO 4 3-) corresponds to the more available species to autotrophs. Excess P concentrations from anthopogenic sources may trigger eutrophication in lakes, ponds, streams and headwaters of estuarine systems. In this study, different P fractions in water and in surface sediments were determined in samples collected in the Current River watershed Parnaíba/PI, in order to access the potential of sediments to contribute to P concentrations in the water column and its export downstream. In water, we measured total P (TP W ), total dissolved P (TDP), particulate P (PP), dissolved inorganic P (DIP) and dissolved organic P (DOP), whereas in sediments we determined total P (TP), total inorganic P (TIP) and organic P (TOP). Particulate P is the dominant fraction in river transport, corresponding to an average of 78% of TP w , whereas in sediment the organic P fraction predominates, accounting for 53% of the total P content in this compartment.Keywords: Nutrients; hydrochemistry; multivariate analysis. ResumoO Fósforo (P) é um elemento essencial para todas as formas de vida e o ortofosfato (PO 4 3-) corresponde a forma mais disponível do nutriente para assimilação de organismos autotróficos. Concentrações excessivas de P a partir de fontes pontuais e/ou difusas podem causar a eutrofização da água em lagos, represas, riachos e cabeceiras dos sistemas estuarinos. Neste estudo diferentes frações de fósforo na água e em sedimentos superficiais foram determinadas em amostras coletadas em fevereiro de 2010 no rio Corrente dos Matões na região hidrográfica do Parnaíba/PI, com vistas a acessar o potencial dos sedi e tos e o t i ui pa a as o e t ações de fósfo o a olu a d'água do io e sua expo tação para bacias a jusante. Na água foram medidas as concentrações de fósforo total (PT a ), fósforo total dissolvido (PTD), fósforo particulado (PP), inorgânico dissolvido (PID) e orgânico dissolvido, já nos sedimentos foram determinadas as frações total (PT), inorgânica total (PIT) e orgânica. A forma particulada é a preferencial no transporte aquático, correspondendo em média a 78% do PT a , enquanto que nos sedimentos predominou a fração orgânica, perfazendo 53% do conteúdo total de P neste compartimento.Palavras-chave: nutrientes; hidroquímica; análise multivariada.
