Distribution of nickel (Ni) in peatland situated alongside mineral soil derived from ultrabasic rocks

Abstract: <p>Detailed studies of Ni distribution in peat that is influenced by Ni-rich soil derived from ultrabasic rocks are still limited. The objective of this study was to reveal the characteristics of Ni in peat from Morowali (Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia) at several depths and distances from the boundary of the ultrabasic mineral soil. Peat was sampled from depths of 0–30, 30–60, and 60–90 cm at distances of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 m from the border of the ultrabasic mineral soil in March 20… Show more

“…The same can be said for Ni where correlation between soil pH and Ni was significantly negative (r=-1.00; p<0.01), but otherwise significantly positive (r=1.00; p<0.01) for electrical conductivity, soil moisture, and organic matter. Distribution of Ni in adjacent soil that is contaminated by Ni derived from ultrabasic rock is influenced by the soil physico-chemical properties [11].…”

“…Soil that is formed from parent materials like ultrabasic rock naturally consists of a high concentration of trace elements like Co, Cr, Ni and Fe. Soil erosion had also contributed an increase of these trace elements in other nonultrabasic soil areas [11]. As human population and agricultural products demands increase, the locals had expanded their agricultural activities on ultrabasic soil which is adjacent to ultisol soil where cultivation is more frequently used.…”

“…A single block (around 30 hectares) is usually established as the smallest sampling unit for OPP management. Nevertheless, previous research highlighted the spatiotemporal variability of peat nutrients at sub-block scales, along with the gradients of the distance from the oil palm tree, canal and mineral soil border, peat thickness, sampling depth, oil palm age, season, and land use (Pulunggono et al 2016;Pulunggono 2019;Pulunggono 2020;Pulunggono 2021;Pulunggono 2022a;Pulunggono 2022b). Soil samples must be collected enormously to satisfy the sampling design for this detailed approach, especially for large-scale OPP.…”
