Distribution of Human Papillomavirus Genotype in Anal Condyloma Acuminatum Among Japanese Men: The Higher Prevalence of High Risk Human Papillomavirus in Men Who Have Sex with Men with HIV Infection

Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is known to cause anal condyloma acuminatum (CA) and squamous cell carcinoma. Men who have sex with men (MSM) with HIV infection are frequently co-infected with HPV, especially high risk HPV (HR-HPV) that causes anal squamous cell carcinoma. However, there are few reports of HPV genotype studies in anal lesion of Japanese men. We tried to estimate the distribution of HPV genotypes in anal CA tissue specimens from the Japanese men to elucidate the risk of anal cancer. A tota… Show more

“…e polypeptide hormone produced by thymic epithelial cells is called thymosin, which is an immunomodulator and is used in the treatment of CA by inducing T cell differentiation and regulating immune balance. Compared with thymosin injection, oral preparation has the advantages of good compliance and easy to take and carry, and the degree of acceptance of patients is higher [15][16][17]. Photodynamic therapy utilizes molecular oxygen induced by photosensitizer and light source to selectively break the ring of target tissue cells with 5-aminolevulinic acid.…”

“…Furukawa et al reported a high risk of serotype HPV with high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) leading to anal cancer from the anal CA tissue specimens in HIV-positive MSM patients in Japan. 6 In this case, the patient has a high-risk factor for anal CA in consideration of his sexual behavior. The patient was a bottom MSM, having an average of 2 sexual intercourse per week with multiple sexual partners and rarely used condoms.…”

“…4,5 Therefore, the incidence of anal cancer (squamous cells carcinoma) increases, especially in MSM with HIV. 6 The ideal therapy for CA should be simple, inexpensive, effective, and does not cause side effects. 2 Specific therapy is not yet available so that eradication is not maximal, causing a significant clinical problem and frequent recurrences.…”

“…The meta-analysis of anal HR-HPV and HPV-16 included eight studies, one each from United States [11], Brazil [12], Germany [13], Spain [14], Netherlands [15], Japan [16], Switzerland [17] and Taiwan [18] with a total of 525 cases (Table S1, http://links.lww.com/QAD/ C183, Figure S1, http://links.lww.com/QAD/C179, Fig. 1 and Figure S2, http://links.lww.com/QAD/ C180).…”
