Knowledge of distribution of ABO and Rh blood groups is helpful for effective management of blood banks and safe blood transfusion services. The prevalence of these blood groups varies worldwide and may not be found in equal numbers even among ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to find out the distribution of ABO and Rh (D) blood groups among students attending high schools in Bote town, Ethiopia from March-April 2017. Blood samples were taken from 392 (N = 775) volunteer students from finger-pricks and blood groups were determined on open slide by haemagglutination method using commercially available anti-sera A, B, and Rh (D). Descriptive statistics was used to calculate percentage frequencies of blood phenotype. The genotypic and allelic frequencies of the blood groups were calculated from the observed phenotypes under the assumption of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In the ABO system, type O was the most prevalent (41.3%) followed by A (31.9%), B (21.4%) and AB the least (5.4%), in the pattern O > A > B > AB. Most of the students were found to be Rh+ (92.86%). Regarding the combined ABO/Rh blood groups, O+ was the most prevalent (38%), A+ (30%), B+ (20%) and AB+ (5%) and O-was also the most frequent (3%) among Rh-negative (Rh-) students. The allelic frequencies of O (r), A (p) and B (q), D and d were 0.64, 0.21, 0.15, 0.73 and 0.27, respectively. Genotypic frequency of I O I O was the most (0.413) frequent while that of I B I B was the least (0.021) while DD and dd were 53.3 and 7.3, respectively. The observed and expected frequencies of individuals having ABO and Rh blood were not significantly different in both blood systems (goodness-of-fit χ 2 for ABO = 0.4729, df = 3 and χ 2 for Rh = 0.0145, df = 1; P < 0.05). The present study gives vital information regarding the management of blood bank and transfusion services in the community.

Background: The distributions of ABO blood group and Rh (D) factor is important for population distribution and genetics studies in multi-ethnic countries. Such studies are not completely covered the parts of Ethiopia, a country with multi ethnic groups. Therefore, this study is designed to decipher the population blood group distribution frequency in the population of West Gojam.Methods:A total of 200 Volunteer individuals were participated in this study as a study subject to determine blood group in the study population by the antigen-antibody agglutination test. The results of tests were subjected to allelic frequency distribution calculation using Panmictic index.Results: The total of the two sites had O (r=0.624), A (p=0.2299) and B (q=0.1456) of allele frequency and the genotypic frequency were AA (p2=0.05285), AO (2pr=0.287), BB (q2=0.0212), BO (2qr=0.1818), AB (2pq=0.0669) and OO (r2=0.39). Out of the tested samples 91%, was recorded Rh+ in the same population, with frequency of 0.7 for allele D confirming the majority of the population in this area as Rh+. Fixation indices (F) for ABO gene were 17 and 22 Yilmana Denssa and Mecha respectively which was higher in Ylmana Denssa.Conclusions:The Panmictic index (P)was 78 lower than Mecha site for ABO gene and the observed heterozygosity (Ho) for ABO gene was 0.53 indicating large genetic variations in populations of the study area. Therefore, the findings of this study can be used as a baseline for the genetic diversity of the study area as a reference for Ethiopian ABO blood group phenotypes and genotypes studies.

Background The ABO and Rh blood group systems are the most commonly used blood group systems in clinical settings. They are clinically significant for blood transfusion, organ transplantation, genetic studies, forensic determinations, and medico-legal issues. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the distribution of ABO and Rh-D blood groups among blood donors in the Amhara regional state, Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2016 to September 2018 among blood donors in the four blood bank districts (Gondar, Bahir Dar, Debre Markos, and Dessie) of the Amhara regional state, Ethiopia. A total of 1040 blood donors aged from 18 years old to 60 years old were included using a simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire and a data collection sheet were used to obtain the socio-demographic data and blood group types of study participants. The ABO and Rh-D blood groups were typed using commercially prepared antisera after 1 mL of blood was taken from blood bags. The data was cleared by Epi-Info Version 7 and extracted into SPSS version 25 for analysis. The distribution of data was checked by using the Shapiro–Wilk test. Then, the data was presented in tables and figures. Results In this study, out of 1040 study participants, 55.6% were males with a median age of 20 years (IQR = 19–24 years). In this study, the distribution of ABO blood types O, A, B, and AB was 41.6% (433/1040), 28.7% (298/1040), 22.2% (229/1040), and 7.7% (80/1040), respectively. On the other hand, the Rh-D positivity was 92.5% (962/1040). Conclusion The overall predominant ABO blood group in the Amhara regional state was O (41.6%), and the least was AB (7.7%). Besides, the overall Rh-D negative blood distribution was 7.5%, which ranged from 4.46% to 9.6%. Therefore, this information would be useful to the blood banks, especially in the planning of blood transfusion programmers.
