Distribution, Cytology, Genetic Diversity and Molecular phylogeny of selected species of Zingiberaceae – A Review

Abstract: This review has been mainly focussed on distribution, cytology, genetic diversity and molecular phylogeny of selected species of Zingiberaceae belonging to four genera of high economic importance viz., Alpinia, Amomum, Curcuma and Hedychium. Zingiberaceae comprising ca.50 genera and more than 1600 species is mostly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. Cytological and genetic diversity analyses so far carried out obviously, indicated the genetic relatedness or variation of the species both at intergen… Show more

“…The Zingiberaceae family has been known as the largest family under Zingiberales, comprising 50 genera and more than 1600 species. These species are distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas [11]. Members of Zingiberaceae are flower plants, perennial herbs with creeping horizontal or tuberous rhizomes, which usually grow in moist shady regions [11,12].…”
