“…The sensitivity of SNMS is said to be below that obtainable by Auger electron spectrometry for surface and interface analyses. The distribution of trace elements in low alloy steel has been studied and conditions optimized for the use of SIMS as an aid to further investigations of the use of the technique when coupled with several other surface analysis methods such as electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, for the determination of bulk concentrations, and the microstructure and microdistribution of contaminants (LL17). Results obtained over a long period of time by spark source mass spectrometry as used for the analysis of iron and steels has lead to the conclusion that statistically determined matrix-group-sensitivity factors are valid for quantitative steel analyses if uncertainty factors of the order of 1.4-1.6 are acceptable (LL18).…”
