Dissolving efficacy of different organic solvents on gutta-percha and resilon root canal obturating materials at different immersion time intervals

Abstract: Background Aim:The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the dissolving capability of various endodontic solvents used during endodontic retreatment on resilon and gutta-percha at different immersion time intervals.Materials and Methods:160 ISO no. 40 cones (0.06 taper), 80 each of resilon and gutta-percha were taken as samples for the study. Both resilon and gutta-percha were divided into eight experimental groups of 20 cones (four groups each of resilon and gutta-percha) for immersion in xylene, … Show more

“…The ideal gutta percha solvent should not only allow quick and complete removal of all traces of gutta percha from the canal system but also be biocompatible to avoid any periapical irritation or inflammation. 3,4,5 When the canal system is efficiently cleaned and disinfected and periapical healing is achieved, only then can retreatment have a good prognosis. 6,7 Hence the choice of a good solvent depends on the balance between the clinical safety in usage versus its capacity for dissolution.…”

“…Above all, its potential carcinogenicity raises concerns about its use in the future. 1,3,4 Some researchers have mentioned xylene as the best substitute for chloroform as an endodontic solvent 12 whereas others have stated that it has the same efficacy as orange oil. 13 Xylene is an aromatic organic solvent and allows better control of gutta percha during removal as it slowly softens rather than dissolve gutta percha.…”

“…Predloženi su različiti načini učinkovitog či-šćenja sustava korijenskih kanala, uključujući ručne instrumente od nehrđajućeg čelika (2, 10), rotirajuće instrumente (11), recipročne sustave (12), ultrazvučne instrumente (3) i korištenje otapala za gutaperku (13).…”

“…It is generally accepted that none of the instruments or techniques can prepare root canals or remove root fillings without producing some apically extruded debris (6)(7)(8). Several techniques and instruments can be used to remove gutta-percha, including nickeltitanium (NiTi) systems (9), ultrasonic systems (10), laser systems (11), and solvents (12). Resosolv (Pierre Rolland, Merignac, France) is a solvent specifically produced for solving resin-based sealers, such as AH Plus (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany).…”
