“…The adoption of a manifesto in futuring African HCI identities was developed on the understanding of its politics in development studies [24,71], human-computer interaction [25,80,109] and different dimensions of decolonization [3]. In HCI, a manifesto is widely considered a political instrument that can challenge existing structures, principles, and discourses of organising society [25,80].…”

“…Drawing on these opportunities, challenges and themes, the manifesto for digital social touch in crisis aims to provoke and prompt new ideas by opening an interdisciplinary space to question and imagine newly digital social touch. The manifesto seeks to be a bridge between HCI, computer science and engineers, and social scientists engaged with digital social touch -to "give new life to" (Hanna et al, 2019:2) the design of digital social touch.…”

“…Manifestos are typically short and sharp, often purposefully poetic and ambiguous, with a tone ranging from playful, excited or hopeful through to angry. Manifestos remain less common in HCI in comparison to other disciplines (Hanna et al, 2019), although their take up within HCI appears to have increased recently with the development of manifestos on various aspects of design (e.g., Design Justice Network Principles, 2018), specific technologies, such as Blockchain technology (Elsden et al, 2019) and the Internet of Things (reviewed in Fritsch et al (2018)), and futures more generally (e.g., the Dagstuhl Manifesto series initiated in 2011).…”

“…In the spirit of 'punk HCI', their contribution unleashes the use of an unusual format, at least in the context of HCI. Although it is ring-fenced inside CHI's designated progressive section, alt.chi, this contribution, alongside other HCI and interaction design contributions [22,35,45,20,27,1,21,39,6,24], uses the manifesto as a way of provoking a discussion around complex issues. In many of these manifestos one witnesses attempts by HCI researchers to perform a series of (often overlapping) moves: to speak collectively, build consensus, raise awareness, advocate for and accelerate change, speak for and from the margins, disrupt the status quo, unsettle stuck discourse, sidestep conventional modes, expose broken promises, and 'circumvent ordinary ... avenues' of redress if they are too slow in responding to urgent demands for change [34].…”

“…The 80-minute structured session at CHI was comprised of two separate manifesto writing exercises, and concluded with performances by participant groups for the sharing of results and processes. After modelling our manifesto [24] and explaining the basic rules of gameplay, along with rough guidelines for each activity (e.g. Figure 3), we divided the audience into random groups.…”
