Dissemination of a single ST11 clone of OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae within a large polyclonal hospital outbreak determined by genomic sequencing

Abstract: The population structure of a set of OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates belonging to sequence type 11 (ST11 Kp-OXA) and obtained from two hospitals in Madrid in the period from 2012 to 2015 was studied by genome sequencing. Overall, 97 ST11 Kp-OXA isolates were sequenced and their population structure and demography were studied by Bayesian phylodynamic analysis using core-genome SNVs. In total, 92 isolates wer… Show more

“…Notably, CP-Eco isolates were found in 25 Spanish provinces, and major STs, such as ST131, showed inter-provincial spread. The studied CP-Eco isolates were highly polyclonal, unlike other Enterobacterales, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae that tend to show less genetic diversity ( Oteo et al., 2015 ; Lázaro-Perona et al., 2022 ).…”

“…Clonal transmission of high-risk organisms carrying bla OXA-48-type genes on persistent plasmids has played an important role in the dissemination of OXA-48-type carbapenemases. High-risk Klebsiella pneumoniae ST147, ST307, ST15, ST14 and E. coli ST410, ST38 clonal lineages have been linked to clonal OXA-48-type outbreaks [ 8 11 12 ]. For example, Esherichia coli ST38 encoding a chromosomal bla OXA-48 carbapenemase was found in 25 different hospitals sites around the United Kingdom [ 12 ].…”
