Disseminated Strongyloides stercoralis Infection in HTLV-1-Associated Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma

Abstract: A 55-year-old woman with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1)-associated adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and a history of previously treated Strongyloides stercoralis infection received anti-CD52 monoclonal antibody therapy with alemtuzumab on a clinical trial. After an initial response, she developed ocular involvement by ATL. Alemtuzumab was stopped and high-dose corticosteroid therapy was started to palliate her ocular symptoms. Ten days later, the patient developed diarrhea, vomiting, fever, cough, … Show more

“…Par ailleurs, l'infection par Strongyloides stercoralis ou anguillulose est particulière du fait de sa fréquence, de sa résistance aux traitements et de la possibilité d'une anguillulose maligne secondaire à une diffusion généralisée du parasite. Son dépistage et son traitement systématiques sont importants [21,59,79].…”

“…2,3 Several cytokines, including IL-1, transforming growth factor-b (TGF-b), and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) have shown a correlation with ATLL-associated hypercalcemia, with PTHrP likely playing the most important role. 42 The risk is even higher in ATLL patients treated with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs, such as anti-CD52 alemtuzumab, 43 which our patient (case 1) was treated with. One patient (case 1) developed recurrent S. stercoralis infection in the stomach and duodenum.…”
