“…1) are absent in mutants. Specification of the nVII, nIX, and nX neurons and axonal pathfinding is not affected in mutant embryos, consistent with the normal development of the rhombomeres (r4, r6, r7, and caudal hindbrain) within which these neuronal populations arise (Swiatek and Gridley, 1993;Schneider-Maunoury et al, 1993. However, caudal migration of nVII motor neurons from r4 is defective due to the absence of r5 (Garel et al, 2000; see also Studer, 2001).…”

“…A, Avr II, B, BgI II, E, EcoRI, S, Spe I. (B) Southern blot analysis of several clones of transfected ES cell line CK35 (Schneider-Maunoury et al, 1993) with the 3Ј probe. The wild type allele generates a 7.2-kb fragment, and the mutant allele generates a 11.8-kb fragment.…”

“…Embryos and newborns were X-gal stained as described (Schneider-Maunoury et al, 1993) and, for stages older than E10.5, clarified as previously reported (Levi et al, (Gu et al, 1993), followed by a polyadenylation site (pA) and a positive selection cassette (PGK-Neo). The Cre gene is therefore placed under the control of the Krox-20 regulatory elements.…”

“…It belongs to a multigene family encoding closely related transcription factors, including Krox-20 (Egr-2), Egr-3, and NGFI-C (Egr-4), which have been implicated in diverse processes in a variety of cell types, including cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis in response to extracellular stimuli (Gashler and Sukhatme, 1995). For example, Zif268-deficient mice derived from embryonic stem cells demonstrated female infertility due to the absence of luteinizing hormone transcription by pituitary cells (Lee et al, 1996) and Krox-20-deficient mice have defects in hindbrain development and differentiation of Schwann cells and osteoblasts (Schneider-Maunoury et al, 1993;Swiatek and Gridley, 1993;Topilko et al, 1994;Levi et al, 1996). Zif268, however, does not appear to be required for growth and differentiation of embryonic stem cells (Lee et al, 1995).…”
