Turning heads: Development of vertebrate branchiomotor neurons

Abstract: The cranial motor neurons innervate muscles that control eye, jaw, and facial movements of the vertebrate head and parasympathetic neurons that innervate certain glands and organs. These efferent neurons develop at characteristic locations in the brainstem, and their axons exit the neural tube in well-defined trajectories to innervate target tissues. This review is focused on a subset of cranial motor neurons called the branchiomotor neurons, which innervate muscles derived from the branchial (pharyngeal) arch… Show more

“…For example, motor neuron cell bodies of cranial nerve V (nV) arise in rhombomere (r)2 and r3. This well-defined patterning of nV motor neuron cell bodies is conserved among mouse, chick, and zebrafish (Chandrasekhar, 2004). Establishment and maintenance of specific rhombomere borders is partially determined by the Hox gene family (Lumsden and Krumlauf, 1996;Moens and Prince, 2002).…”

“…In the zebrafish (Danio rerio), FBMNs are born beginning at 16 hours post-fertilization (hpf) in rhombomere (r) 4. Shortly after birth, these neurons undergo caudal migration to r6 and r7 (for reviews, see Chandrasekhar, 2004;Song, 2007). Among many proteins known to regulate this migration in zebrafish are several core planar cell polarity (PCP) components (reviewed by Wada and Okamoto, 2009a;Wada and Okamoto, 2009b).…”

“…A number of studies have addressed the migration of hindbrain neurons and several genes affecting their migration have been identified (reviewed by Hatten, 1999;Wingate 2001;Chandrasekhar, 2004;Sotelo, 2004). Yet, cellular basis for nucleogenesis is still poorly understood.…”
