Disrupted Brain Networks in the Aging HIV+ Population

Abstract: Antiretroviral therapies have become widely available, and as a result, individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are living longer, and becoming integrated into the geriatric population. Around half of the HIV + population shows some degree of cognitive impairment, but it is unknown how their neural networks and brain connectivity compare to those of noninfected people. Here we combined magnetic resonance imaging-based cortical parcellations with high angular resolution diffusion tensor… Show more

“…63 Older HIV+ carriers of APOEε4 exhibited more compromise in networks connections than the noncarriers. 64 In contrast, Morgan et al 65 found no association between APOEε4 carrier status and HAND in a large sample. Therefore, the impact of APOEε4 and alterations in the processing of amyloid and synuclein or neurodegeneration in older HIV-infected individuals is still a matter of debate and needs to be clarified by further studies.…”

“…(d) Connectivity matrix, in which each colored element represents the proportion of detected fibers connecting each of the colored labels in each hemisphere to each of the other colored labels in (c) – computed as a proportion of the total number of extracted fibers in the brain. This general method was used by us in (Jahanshad et al, 2012a, 2013), to which the reader is referred for further details.…”

“…DT-MRI measures water diffusion in tissues, and provides biologically and clinically relevant information on white matter (WM) integrity and connectivity not available from other imaging modalities. It is increasingly used to study pathology and connectivity of WM pathways in the living brain (Thomason et al ., 2011; Jahanshad et al ., 2012; Daianu et al ., 2013). …”
