Disentangling factors limiting diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), spatio‐temporal population abundance: A tool for pest forecasting

Abstract: Data-mining techniques play an important role in hyperparameter optimization of heterogeneous environmental factors and their relative contribution as determinants of incidences in insect pest ecological studies. A multidimensional field-based surveillance was conducted in two seasons (24 months), July-June of each season (2015/2016 -season 1 and 2016/2017 -season 2) using sex-pheromone-baited traps and Thermocron i-Buttons to identify key determinants of population abundance of diamondback moth, Plutella xylo… Show more

“…CCRT was defined as the time (minutes) required for each beetle to stand on its legs (self-righting), without any interference or stimulation from the observer, following chill coma (as in David et al, 1998;Gotcha et al, 2018). Environmental microclimate temperatures were recorded using thermocron iButtons (Dallas Semiconductors, Model DS1920) [0.5 ∘ C accuracy; 30-min sampling frequency]) across 10 sites in Botswana for 2 years (see Machekano et al, 2019). Temperatures eliciting chill coma and those stopping activity (CT min ) were frequently recorded across all 10 sites.…”

“…Many aspects of the population dynamics of P . xylostella have recently been documented, with most of these studies analyzing the temporal patterns of adult capture data 8 13 . These observations suggest that the temporal fluctuation of P .…”

“…It is very important for farmers to achieve good pest control. Accurate and timely pest forecasting can help farmers timely take measures to effectively control agricultural pests and reduce the detrimental effects of pesticide abuse on the environment and the human body ( Xiao et al, 2000 ; Dalal and Singh, 2017 ; Malschi et al, 2018 ; Hu et al, 2019 ; Machekano et al, 2019 ; Ponomarev et al, 2019 ).…”
