“…A Fish Disease Index based on externally visible diseases and parasites, visible liver neoplasms and other histopathologically detected liver lesions has been developed and used extensively in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and off Iceland. This index was found to be an important tool as an ecosystem health indicator 52 .…”

“…Despite their importance, these skin lesions were previously merely scored macroscopically using a crude semi‐quantitative scoring system of the skin ulcerations based on their presence, intensity and impact on the host. The scoring of skin ulcerations is part of the calculated Fish Disease Index (FDI) used as indicators for the health of the marine environment (Bucke et al., ; Lang et al., ). This superficial scoring was overcome in the present study, that is, by sampling freshly killed fish on board of the research vessel and perform a thorough sampling to avoid the confounding effects of post‐mortem degeneration, bacterial overgrowth (Khuntia, ) and generating a broad database.…”

“…The approach presented here adds to our understanding of the mechanisms of liver tumors in sentinel marine flatfish. This greater insight into the drivers of disease will further aid in the interpretation of field data where fish are increasingly beings used as sentinels of wider environmental health (Stentiford et al, 2010;Lang et al, 2015;Lyons et al, 2015). CDKN1B with mean data plotted (+SD); n=12 fish for normal and n=8 fish for HCA.…”
