Disease spectrum of alcoholic liver disease in Beijing 302 Hospital from 2002 to 2013

Abstract: Alcohol consumption in China has substantially increased over the last 3 decades and the number of patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is rising at an alarming rate. However, accurate and representative data on time trends in its hospitalization rates are not available. The aim of this study is to assess the current status and burden of ALD in China by analyzing the data from a large tertiary referral hospital, Beijing 302 Hospital.Data were retrospectively recorded from patients diagnosed as ALD in Be… Show more

“…Similar results were reported in the study by Yamasaki et al [29], in which the Lieber-DeCarli diet was given for 5 weeks to mature rats. By contrast, Tahir and Sultana [30] stated that mature rats exhibited a higher ADH activity after 4 weeks of increasing consumption of ethanol (5,8,10, and 12 g per kg of body mass) compared with the control animals, while Chandrasekaran et al [31] stated an increased in vitro ADH activity after prolonged ethanol consumption. The lack of significant differences between the experimental groups and control group, as observed in the present study, may be attributed to the ethanol concentration of 10% in the applied alcoholic beverages, which may have not been enough to increase the ADH activity significantly, or the amount of alcohol consumed may have been adequately converted by ADH, and so, the metabolic pathway of ethanol detoxification was not disturbed.…”

“…Recently, the prevalence of ALD in adolescents and young adults is found to be rapidly increasing [9], and in some countries, for example China, it has doubled over the last 10 years [10]. Furthermore, the mortality rate related to chronic liver diseases that occur due to the excessive consumption of alcohol has also been increasing, especially among young adults aged 25-34 years, as observed by a study in Great Britain [11].…”

“…Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is well characterized and represents a worldwide health problem [104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121]. Main issues relate to early recognition of the disease and clear differentiation from other frequent acute and chronic liver diseases.…”

“…However, these data are sampled and are usually targeted at the cause of death and the morbidity rates of specific diseases, including some infectious diseases and a small proportion of chronic diseases, such as cancer. Second, although existing research has studied disease patterns, few have explored the characteristics of those patients who primarily seek service in community institutions [5][6][7][8]. To increase the accuracy of the morbidity rates of broader categories of infectious diseases and NCDs, increasing numbers of studies are beginning to focus on the high-level data, such as inpatient and outpatient electronic health records (EHRs), which are collected from healthcare institutions.…”
