Effect of temperature on amplitude-dependent internal friction and yield stress in crystals

The temperature dependence of the ultrasonic amplitude u,(T) a t a constant level of reversible dislocation strain is derived from the data on the amplitude-dependent internal friction. Comparing a, ( T) with the temperature dependence of the macroscopic yield stress u,( T) reveals that us( T) is proportional to a, ( T) within the temperature range of 4.2 to 300 K for a large variety of crystals.The reasons for this proportionality are discussed in terms of (i) a general mechanism of thermally activated dislocation motion for both micro-and macro-deformations and (ii) a universal stressinduced mechanism (not thermally activated) which itself is temperature-dependent.Die Temperaturabhsngigkeit der Ultraschallamplitude u,( T), die einem konstanten Wert der reversiblen Versetzungsverformung entspricht, wird aus den Daten der amplitudenabhangigen inneren Reibung erhalten. Beim Vergleich mit der Temperaturabhangigkeit der makroskopischen FlieDgrenze a , ( T) wird gefunden, da5 a*( T) im Temperaturbereich von 4,2 bis 300 K proportional zu a,(T) fur eine Vielzahl von Kristallen verliiuft. Als Grund fur diem Proportionalitiit wird diskutiert (1) ein genereller Mechanismus der thermisch aktivierten Versetzungsbewegung fur die Mikro-und Makroverformung bzw. (2) ein universeller spannungsinduzierternicht thermisch aktivierter -Mechanismus, welcher als solcher temperaturabhsngig ist.
