Of many compounds examined in vapour form in moisture‐laden air, a number will, in varying degrees, confer protection upon ferrous and some non‐ferrous metals when contained in the same enclosed space. Certain esters (e.g. n‐ and iso‐propyl benzoates, n‐butyl benzoates and methyl cinnamate) afford good protection to steel. Complete inhibition of the corrosion of steel and cast iron may be effected in moist air, even when heavily contaminated with sulphur dioxide, by certain amine carbonates, e.g. cyclohexylamine carbonate. These compounds also possess, in marked degree, the property of arresting the further corrosion of iron and steel surfaces that have already become rusted by exposure to moist polluted air.

Mit Hilfe einer mikrophotometrischen Methode wurde die Korrosion eines unlegierten Stahls (St 38 u2) in reiner Feuchtluft und in Gegenwart niedermolekularer gesättigter Monocarbonsäuren untersucht. Außerdem wurde das elektrochemische Verhalten dieses Stahls in entsprechenden wäßrigen Lösungen charakterisiert. Es wurde gefunden, daß der Stahl im Unterschied zu reinem Eisen bereits in verunreinigungsfreier Luft korrodiert, wenn (RL) ≥70%. Die Wirkung der flüchtigen Monocarbonsäuren auf die Korrosion hängt vom pH‐Wert des auf der Oxidschicht des Eisenwerkstoffs adsorbierten Wasserfilms ab. Oberhalb von pHkrit fungiert Sauerstoff als Passivator und die Anionen der Carbonsäuren stabilisieren die Passivschicht durch bildung von Anlagerungskomplexen. Abschließend werden für den Mechanismus der atmosphärischen Korrosion der Eisenwerkstoffe allgemeine Schlußfolgerungen abgeleitet.

The corrosion process induced by evaporation of sessile droplets from aqueous sodium chloride solutions on planar iron surfaces was quantitatively investigated. The spatial distribution of the salt inside the evaporating sessile droplet, which is influenced by the initial salt concentration in the droplet bulk, is correlated to the localization of the anodic and cathodic reactions at the electrolyte–metal interface over the footprint droplet area. At low salt concentration, the inverse of the classical well‐accepted Evans model is observed due to the hydrodynamic flows linked to evaporation: the anode area is established near the three‐phase contact line region. Increasing salt concentration leads to a more uniform pitted sessile droplet: we observed locally anodic and cathodic areas over the droplet surface at the metal–electrolyte interface, where local variations in chloride concentrations occur. In addition, the presence of corrosion products and some pits demonstrate that pitting corrosion takes place if the salt concentration reaches a threshold value, experimentally determined by an optical set‐up.
