Discussing State‐of‐the‐Art Spatial Visualization Techniques Applicable for the Epidemiological Surveillance Data on the Example of Campylobacter spp. in Raw Chicken Meat

Abstract: Within the European activities for the 'Monitoring and Collection of Information on Zoonoses', annually EFSA publishes a European report, including information related to the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in Germany. Spatial epidemiology becomes here a fundamental tool for the generation of these reports, including the representation of prevalence as an essential element. Until now, choropleth maps are the default visualization technique applied in epidemiological monitoring and surveillance reports made by… Show more

“…Due to availability of data in some sort of spatial aggregation, choropleth mapping technique is popular in disease mapping compared to dot map or isopleths map [33, 38]. Aggregated data is either directly plotted in the map or rate of incidence is computed using base population and level of spatial aggregation.…”

“…These techniques were also applied to other mosquito-borne infectious disease to map distribution, assess clusters, and examine the diffusion patterns earlier. 7,11 Choropleth mapping technique, the most popular of the methods in disease mapping 14,21 for aggregated data, was used to visualize the outbreak. The spatial distribution was found to be uneven with the substantial variation in the incidence rate.…”

“…A cartogram can replace the real area of a region with the size of an attribute value and then distort and deform the geographic region to reflect quantitative characteristics more intuitively 93 . Plaza-Rodrıguez et al 94 used a cartogram to analyze the spatial distribution of the detection rates of Campylobacter spp. in retail raw chicken meat in Germany (Fig.…”
