Discriminating Between Different Streamflow Regimes by Using the Fisher-Shan Method: An Application to the Colombia Rivers

Abstract: A b s t r a c tThe Fisher-Shannon (FS) information plane, defined by the Fisher information measure (FIM) and the Shannon entropy power (N X ), was robustly used to investigate the complex dynamics of eight monthly streamflow time series in Colombia. In the FS plane the streamflow series seem to aggregate into two different clusters corresponding to two different climatological regimes in Colombia. Our findings suggest the use of the statistical quantity defined by the FS information plane as a tool to discrim… Show more

“…Only 8.5 % of the river headwaters remain pristine (Fundación Pro-Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, 1997). These land-use changes have led to a general loss of hydrologic modulation capacity in the watersheds, and in turn have favored the occurrence of changes in the hydrological patterns, specifically, an increase in seasonal streamflow extremes (e.g., Pierini et al, 2017;Hoyos et al, 2019).…”

“…The concept of Fisher Information (FI) was introduced in the statistical theory estimation (Fisher, 1925), while the special case of FI of a location parameter of a parametric distribution was termed FIM (Frieden, 1990). Subsequently, FIM has been used to describe physical systems (Frieden, 1990;Boumali and Labidi, 2018), and has been applied for time series analysis in physiology (Martin et al, 1999), geophysics (Telesca et al, 2011;Balasis et al, 2016), ecology (Ba et al, 2020), meteorology (Pierini et al, 2016;Guignard et al, 2019b), hydrology (Pierini et al, 2011(Pierini et al, , 2015Lovallo et al, 2013), and social behaviour (Li et al, 2020). For continuous one dimensional variable X with probability density function (pdf) f(x) the FIM I X is defined as (Vignat and Bercher, 2003)…”
