Discrepancies in global vitamin C recommendations: a review of RDA criteria and underlying health perspectives

Abstract: The concept of a 'recommended dietary allowance' (RDA) and similar terms describing the daily intake of essential nutrients recommended for healthy individuals is widely used by various health authorities around the world. For vitamin C, however, there remain significant discrepancies in the criteria used to establish dietary recommendations and consequently, global recommendations for daily vitamin C intake vary by more than five fold. While it appears that the scientific data underlying the recommendations a… Show more

“…There are potential limitations of their use in clinical studies. Both agents are present in varying degrees in individuals' diets and global recommendations for vitamin C intake vary extensively across the globe (135). Prophylactic interventions in general populations within the community will therefore be confounded by the quantity present in differing diets.…”

“…The oxidative imbalance in alveolar structure can lead to chronic inflammation by stimulating neutrophils and macrophages, enhancing proteases and oxidants and inactivating protease inhibitors. According to the review by Carr & Lykkesfeldt (90) , evidence suggests that a daily intake of at least 200 mg of vitamin C may promote beneficial health effects for smokers.…”

“…The current global Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin C varies dramatically across countries, ranges from 40 mg/day in United Kingdom and India to 110 mg/day in European countries to achieve the adequate needs to maintain the balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant protection [79]. These values need to be increased for smokers as cigarette smoking increases oxidative stress and metabolic turnover of vitamin C as well as pregnant and lactating women due to the needs of the developing foetus and growing infant [79]. Obesity also affects the requirement for vitamin C due to a body weight-dependent dilution effect.…”
