Red mud (RM) is a highly alkaline polymetallic waste generated via the Bayer process during alumina production. It contains metals that are critical for a sustainable development of modern society. Due to a shortage of global resources of many metals, efficient large-scale processing of RM has been receiving increasing attention from both researchers and industry. This study investigated the solubilization of metals from RM, together with RM dealkalization, via sulfur (S0) oxidation catalyzed by the moderately thermophilic bacterium Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans. Optimization of the bioleaching process was conducted in shake flasks and 5-L bioreactors, with varying S0:RM mass ratios and aeration rates. The ICP analysis was used to monitor the concentrations of dissolved elements from RM, and solid residues were analyzed for surface morphology, phase composition, and Na distribution using the SEM, XRD, and STXM techniques, respectively. The results show that highest metal recoveries (89% of Al, 84% of Ce, and 91% of Y) were achieved with the S0:RM mass ratio of 2:1 and aeration rate of 1 L/min. Additionally, effective dealkalization of RM was achieved under the above conditions, based on the high rates (>95%) of Na, K, and Ca dissolution. This study proves the feasibility of using bacterially catalyzed S0 oxidation to simultaneously dealkalize RM and efficiently extract valuable metals from the amassing industrial waste.

The long-term storage of bauxite residue (red mud) is harmful to the environment and the tailing ponds also cover large areas. At the moment there is no largescale utilization of bauxite residue. However, some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of rare-earth elements (REEs) and the recovery of these REEs together with(out) other metals and utilization of the generated residue in other applications (e.g., building materials) can solve the storage problem of bauxite residue. This paper reviews the recovery of REEs, possibly alongside other valuable metals, from bauxite residue. REEs can be recovered from bauxite residue by direct leaching or by smelting followed by leaching. The main disadvantages of direct acid leaching are the consumption of large amounts of acid for neutralization, the handling of large volumes of effluents, and the difficulty in using the bauxite residue after leaching. Recovery of iron prior to leaching can improve the economics of the process. However, high alumina in the bauxite residue increases the flux and acid consumption. Therefore, alumina needs to be removed by alkali roasting prior to smelting in order to decrease the flux and acid consumption. The alkali roasting-smeltingleaching process allows recovery of aluminum, iron, titanium, and REEs from bauxite residue. The residue generated in this process can be used in building materials and cementitious binders. Other processes with commercial potential are the Orbite, the pressure leaching, and the acid baking processes.

Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή εξετάστηκε η εκχύλιση σπανίων γαιών από χαμηλήςσυγκέντρωσης πρωτογενείς και δευτερογενείς ορυκτές πρώτες ύλες, οι οποίες δεν επιδέχονταιμεταλλουργικό εμπλουτισμό, με τη χρήση καινοτόμων οργανικών διαλυτών, οι οποίοι συνδυάζουνεκλεκτικότητα κατά την εκχύλιση των ορυκτών και εύκολη αναγεννησιμότητα για τηνεπαναχρησιμοποίηση τους.Πιο συγκεκριμένα διερευνήθηκε η εκχύλιση καταλοίπων Βωξίτη, το στερεό αδιάλυτο υπόλειμμα κατάτην παραγωγή Αλουμίνας από μετάλλευμα Βωξίτη, με το ιοντικό υγρό (δισ-τριφλουορόμεθανοσουλφονιμίδιο της βεταΐνης) [Hbet][Tf2N], για την εκλεκτική διάλυση σπανίων γαιών(REE) έναντι του σιδήρου. Παράγοντες επίδρασης της εκχύλισης που μελετήθηκαν είναι ηθερμοκρασία, ο χρόνος εκχύλισης, η πυκνότητα πολφού και η προσθήκη νερού στο ιοντικό υγρό.Βρέθηκε ότι μικρή προσθήκη νερού, υψηλή θερμοκρασία και αυξημένος χρόνος εκχύλισης είχε ωςαποτέλεσμα 70-85% ανάκτηση REE με αντίστοιχη εκχύλιση σιδήρου (Fe) μικρότερη από 3%. Το Scέδειξε διαφορετική συμπεριφορά εκχύλισης από τις υπόλοιπες REE με την ανάκτηση του να μηνυπερβαίνει το 45%. Η εκχύλιση των τιτανίου (Ti) και πυριτίου (Si) είναι αμελητέα, ενώ το αλουμίνιο (Al)έχει μέγιστη ανάκτηση 30%, ακολουθούμενη από σχεδόν ολική διάλυση του ασβεστίου (Ca) καινατρίου (Na). Από τα αποτελέσματα εκχύλισης φαίνεται ότι οι REE και ένα μέρος του Sc συνδέονταιστα κατάλοιπα Βωξίτη με τις ορυκτολογικές φάσεις ασβεστίου και αργίλιου, ενώ το υπολειπόμενο Scσχετίζεται πιθανώς με τις αδιάλυτες ορυκτολογικές φάσεις Fe και Ti. Το κατάλοιπο της εκχύλισηςεμπλουτίζεται σε οξείδια σίδηρου, αλουμίνιου, τιτάνιου και πυριτίου και μπορεί να αξιοποιηθείπεραιτέρω. Τα μέταλλα εν διαλύσει στο κυοφορούν ιοντικό υγρό μπορούν να εξαχθούνχρησιμοποιώντας όξινο υδατικό μέσο. Κατά την εξαγωγή τους μεταφέρονται από την υδρόφοβη ιοντικήφάση στην όξινη υδατική φάση, ενώ το ιοντικό υγρό αναγεννάται και μετά το διαχωρισμό των 2 φάσεωνμπορεί να επαναχρησιμοποιηθεί για εκχύλιση σε καινούργιο δείγμα. Διαδοχική έκπλυση τουκυοφορούντος ιοντικού υγρού σε διαφορετικό εύρος pH έχει ως αποτέλεσμα τον καθαρισμό τουδιαλύματος από τα κύρια μέταλλα Ca, Na και Al οδηγώντας σε ένα προ-συγκεντρωμένο όξινο διάλυμαμε αυξημένη συγκέντρωση Sc έως και 95mg/L και μειωμένες προσμείξεις συνδιαλυόμενων μετάλλων.Επιπρόσθετα, το [Hbet][Tf2N] εφαρμόστηκε ως εκχυλιστικό μέσο για την εκχύλιση σπανίων γαιών απόφτωχό πρωτογενές μετάλλευμα στην περιοχή Rödberg προερχόμενο από το σύμπλεγμα ανθρακικώνκοιτασμάτων Fen στην Νορβηγία. Οι σπάνιες γαίες στο Rödberg εμφανίζονται σε φθορο-ανθρακικές ορυκτολογικές φάσεις της ομάδας ορυκτών Βαστναιζίτη. Παράγοντες εκχύλισης που διερευνήθηκανείναι η θερμοκρασία, ο χρόνος εκχύλισης, η πυκνότητα πολφού και η προσθήκη νερού στο ιοντικόυγρό. Η ανάκτηση σπανίων γαιών έφτασε στο εύρος 65-100% με ανάκτηση 80-90% για Ca, Mg, ενώ ηεκχύλιση είναι επιλεκτική ως προς το Si, Fe όπου εμπλουτίζονται στο στερεό υπόλειμμα εκχύλισης. Ηεξαγωγή μετάλλων από το παραγόμενο κυοφορούν ιοντικό διάλυμα με τη χρήση όξινου υδατικούδιαλύματος είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τον διπλασιασμό της συγκέντρωσης των σπανίων γαιών στην υδατικήφάση για περαιτέρω εξευγενισμό.Τα διαγράμματα ροής της εκχύλισης καταλοίπων Βωξίτη και μεταλλεύματος Rödberg εφαρμόστηκαν σεμικρής κλίμακας πιλοτική διάταξη που κατασκευάστηκε στο Ε.Μ.Π προκειμένου να αξιολογηθεί ηαναγέννηση και ανακυκλωσιμότητα του ιοντικού υγρού. Οι πιλοτικές δοκιμές έδειξαν ότι το [Hbet][Tf2N]μπορεί να αναγεννηθεί και να επαναχρησιμοποιηθεί σε αρκετούς κύκλους εκχύλισης χωρίς να χάνειτην εκχυλιστική του ικανότητα. Το καρβοξυλικό οξύ που είναι προσαρτημένο στο κατιόν του ιοντικούυγρού είναι ικανό να διαλυτοποιεί τα οξείδια και τις ανθρακικές ενώσεις των μετάλλων επιτρέπονταςέτσι την ανάπτυξη εναλλακτικών μεθόδων υδρομεταλλουργικής επεξεργασίας φτωχών κοιτασμάτωνσπανίων γαιών ελαχιστοποιώντας την προσθήκη οξέος και αντίστοιχα την παραγωγή υγρώναποβλήτων. Με αυτό τον τρόπο δημιουργούνται συνθήκες με προοπτική ανάπτυξης διεργασιών πιοφιλικών στο περιβάλλον.
