Discovery of a Pulse-phase-transient Cyclotron Line in the X-Ray pulsar GRO J2058+42

Abstract: We report the discovery of absorption features in the X-ray spectrum of the transient X-ray pulsar GRO J2058+42. The features are detected around ∼ 10, ∼ 20 and ∼ 30 keV in both NuSTAR observations carried out during the source type II outburst in spring 2019. The most intriguing property is that the deficit of photons around these energies is registered only in the narrow phase interval covering around 10% of the pulsar spin period. We interpret these absorption lines as a cyclotron resonant scattering line (… Show more

“…Despite a non-detection of any cyclotron line in the spectra, we are not entirely rejecting the idea of presence of it and provided an upper limit of the optical depth for each energy (Figure 4). In this context, we would like to mention Molkov et al (2019). They reported a cyclotron line at 10 keV along with itâȂŹs two harmonics at a particular pulse phase.…”

“…The absence of the cyclotron line in some observed energy spectra of the XRBs' can possibly due to a large gradient of B-field strength over the visible column height or the latitude on the surface of a neutron star. The appearance of cyclotron line in certain pulse phases can be due to the partial eclipsing of the accretion column during which an observer is able to see some parts of the column (Molkov et al 2019). In such a case, the magnetic field in the visible part of the accretion column is not so varied and we can observe cyclotron line in these phases like in the case of GRO J2058+42 (Molkov et al 2019).…”

This can also be due to the gravitational bending of light as it affects the visibility of both the accretion columns and neutron star (see eg.…”
