“…In the present study, we demonstrated that elevation of waist circumference based on IDF criteria was the most prevalent criterion with a total frequency of 80.2% which is 87.9% and 72% among males and females, respectively that was the superior component to yield larger metabolic syndrome prevalence. This result is higher than the community-based study done among Andean highlanders (75.9%) (36) and the study done in South African Asian Indians who found a prevalence of (73.1%) even though harmonized criteria was used (37).…”

“…The varied prevalence of MS between northern and southern areas of China may be partially explained by different lifestyles, e.g., physical exercise, education level, and economic status [ 16 , 25 ]. In addition to these factors, studies have also revealed that the MS prevalence depends on the definition used [ 26 28 ]. The community-based study in Shanghai also revealed moderate to good agreement between the JCDCG definition with the IDF and ATPIII definition, with kappa value between 0.635 and 0.825 in both women and men.…”

“…Detailed personal, menstrual and family history of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and obesity (MetS) was taken on a predesigned proforma. MetS by definition comprises three or more of the following: (1) central obesity with waist circumference ≥80 cm (WHO cutoff for Asian women), (2) systolic blood pressure ≥130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥85 mmHg or taking antihypertensive medication, (3) fasting plasma glucose ≥100 mg/dl or previously diagnosed type 2 diabetes, (4) plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol <50 mg/dl, (5) plasma triglycerides >150 mg/dl (as per American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute [AHA/NHLBI] criteria) [ 14 ]. Detailed physical examination was done including the measurement of blood pressure, pulse, waist circumference, and BMI.…”
